About Miya-zome tenugui
Miya-zome is a tenugui and Yukata wear brand produced along a small river called Tagawa in Utsunomiya, a major city 100km north of Tokyo. Dyeing factories are often built beside rivers, because lots of clean water is necessary to wash away dye materials from tenugui during production process.
We carry Miya-zome tenugui from a family owned factory established in 1905. Since then, the brand has been taken over by the family and stubborn artisans. They got an award for the excellent traditional dyeing technique, from the local administration of Tochigi Prefecture. They use the method called "Chu-sen". With this method, artisans pour dyes on top of tenugui cloths and vacuum dyes from the bottom, and go through the same process by turning tenugui upside down.
Please read our blog article here photographing Miya-zome factory.

About Chu-sen dye method
Chu-sen dyes every string of tenugui cloths beautifully and makes tenugui design reversible. Moreover, the Chu-sen tenugui keeps the cotton ability to absorb lots of water. If you compare Chu-sen with silk screen print using pigment, you can tell the difference. With silk screen printing, only upper side is printed and the tenugui does not absorb so much water. Chu-sen tenugui is an unique combination of functionality and beauty.
